Responsible gambling tools that work outside GamStop
The GamStop register is a powerful tool where it reaches. This page covers what to use for the space it doesn't reach — device-level blocks, bank-level blocks, counselling, and helplines. Everything below is free or low-cost and available from anywhere in the UK.
Why standalone tools matter more offshore
When you play at a UKGC-licensed site, the operator is required to offer deposit limits, session limits, reality checks, and self-exclusion, and they are required to actually enforce them. Some of the friction that keeps play healthy is baked into the platform. Move to an offshore operator and much of that friction disappears — some sites replicate parts of it, most don't. The self-management burden shifts to you.
Two implications follow. First, if you know you are the kind of player who needs external friction to stop, offshore play is a bad fit — even a well-run offshore operator will not stop you from a session you should have interrupted. Second, if you play offshore anyway, adding your own friction layer is not paranoid, it is basic hygiene. The tools below are the ones we consider essential.
Device-level blocking software
Gamban
Gamban is the leading paid blocking-software product in the UK. It runs on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. It maintains a database of tens of thousands of gambling sites — UK-licensed, offshore, crypto, sportsbook, poker, bingo — and blocks access at the device level. Removal requires an uninstall process that involves waiting periods; you can't casually toggle it off in a moment of urge. Cost is around £2 per month.
BetBlocker
BetBlocker is a free product from a UK-registered charity, with a similar block list and a similar difficult-to-remove design. If cost is a barrier, BetBlocker is the direct answer.
Betfilter
An older desktop-focused product. Still works, still supported. Some users prefer it for its longer track record and its specific reporting features.
Install any of these on every device you gamble from, not just the one you gamble from most. The gap is where the play flows to.
Bank-level gambling blocks
Almost every UK bank now offers a gambling-transaction block toggle in its app. The list is close to universal:
- Monzo, Starling, Revolut — one-tap in the app, 48-hour cooldown to disable.
- Barclays — in-app block covering most gambling merchant codes.
- Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland — under the "Card Freezes" section of the app.
- HSBC, First Direct — in the app under card management.
- NatWest, RBS, Ulster — Card Manager section.
- Nationwide — via the Internet Bank or app card controls.
- Santander, TSB, The Co-op — enable via app or customer services.
The 48-hour cooldown that most banks apply before you can disable the block is the important feature. It is enough time for an urge to pass. If your bank does not offer a block, that is a reason to open a second account with one that does — Monzo and Starling take minutes.
Bank-level blocks are complementary to device-level blocks, not a substitute. Device blocks stop you finding the site; bank blocks stop the deposit going through if you find the site anyway. Belt and braces.
Counselling and treatment
GamCare
GamCare is the UK's leading gambling-support charity. Services are free and include: the National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133, free, 24/7), NetLine web chat with trained advisers, structured face-to-face and remote counselling programmes, and support groups. GamCare also operates the residential treatment programme at Gordon Moody. If you are unsure where to start, start here.
NHS Gambling Services
The NHS national and regional gambling clinics provide clinical treatment for gambling harm, free at the point of use. Referral is via GP or via self-referral through the clinic's website. Waiting times vary but access is expanding.
Gamblers Anonymous
Peer-support meetings on the 12-step model, in-person across the UK and online. Free. See gamblersanonymous.org.uk for meeting listings.
Gambling Therapy
Gambling Therapy is a global, multi-language service run by the Gordon Moody charity. Useful if English is not your first language or if you want a service outside the UK-charity ecosystem.
Structural changes worth considering
Beyond specific tools, some structural life changes reduce exposure at low cost. A separate current account used only for essentials (rent, bills, food) with a small buffer, and a separate savings account with the bulk of your money, means that even in a lapse the potential damage is limited to whatever is in the everyday account. Removing saved card details from every browser and app. Letting your partner or a trusted friend have shared visibility on the bank block toggle. None of these is a magic bullet; combined they change the odds meaningfully.
